Why we think this is worth studying — and where the existing evidence is honest about what it doesn't yet know.
Does sailing actually do anything for you, or is that just something adults say?
Short answer: probably yes, and scientists have actually checked.
Studies of kids who go on multi-day sailing voyages have found real jumps in self-esteem — not just "felt good for a day," but still measurable months later in some studies. Sailing also turns out to be a proper workout. Holding your body out over the side of a moving boat to keep it flat (called hiking) uses your core and legs the whole time you're doing it — researchers have measured it and it's a genuine physical load, not just sitting near water.
There's also something about being around water specifically. Across a bunch of studies, people rate scenes with water as more calming and more attention-restoring than scenes without it — even before you get in a boat.
Here's the honest bit, because we're not going to oversell this to you: not every study agrees on how long the good feelings last. Some found gains that stuck around for a year. Others found a boost right after camp that faded within a few months. Nobody has specifically studied kids doing regular day sailing at a club — like you do — versus a big two-week voyage. That's a real gap in the science, and it's exactly the kind of thing this study is trying to find out.
So this isn't us telling you sailing will fix your life. It's us saying: something real does seem to happen out there, we don't fully understand it yet, and if you're part of this programme, you could genuinely be helping answer a question nobody else has answered properly.
Sailing has a reputation — calm, character-building, a bit old-fashioned. What does the actual evidence say?
The most developed research comes from a University of Otago group studying 10-day voyages on the Spirit of New Zealand. One study of 190 adolescents found meaningful gains in self-esteem that were still present three months later; a follow-up on the same cohort found gains persisting a full year on. Resilience findings point to a specific mechanism: it's not the boat itself that helps, it's the sense of belonging to a crew — being needed, trusted, and part of something with a shared goal.
Closer to our own context, a large UK study followed nearly 10,000 people from childhood to age 50 and found that those who'd been Scouts or Guides had measurably better mental health decades later — and, strikingly, the usual link between social disadvantage and poorer mental health simply wasn't there for former Scouts. That's not a sailing study, but it's the closest population match to what we run at PMYC: a community club, not a school programme or elite academy.
Dinghy sailing's core manoeuvre — hiking — has been measured directly: energy demand rises with how long and how hard you sail, confirming it's genuine, sustained physical exertion. And on safety, the numbers are reassuring: recreational dinghy sailing has one of the lowest injury rates of any youth sport studied, well below rugby, football, or surfing. The main real hazard researchers flag isn't collisions or capsizes — it's sunburn, from low sunscreen and lifejacket compliance in casual settings. That's a straightforward, fixable thing for any programme to take seriously.
There's a well-established idea that "blue space" — being near or on water — is more restorative than ordinary urban settings. That much holds up. What's less settled is whether water offers anything beyond green space, or beyond simply being physically active outdoors. Several controlled studies have found water and greenery produce similar mood benefits, and the honest current view among researchers is that physical activity may be doing more of the work than the water itself.
Where we're honest about the gaps — because credibility matters more than a good story:
That combination — real, promising evidence with genuine, specific gaps — is exactly why Project Anchored Youth exists. We're not trying to prove sailing is magic. We're trying to find out, properly and locally, what a community sailing programme actually does for the young people in it — something the existing research hasn't been able to answer yet.
Project Anchored Youth is a research collaboration between Aurora Sailing and a leading Melbourne university, based at Port Melbourne Yacht Club.
This section is deliberately even-handed. Sections (a)–(c) summarise supporting evidence; section (d) presents the methodological weaknesses, null results, and contradicting findings this literature must confront. Every citation has been checked against the primary source or an authoritative bibliographic record.
The most developed sailing-specific literature comes from a University of Otago group working with 10-day Spirit of New Zealand voyages. Grocott & Hunter (2009) — a quasi-experimental study of 190 adolescents assessed at four time points — found significant increases in global and domain-specific self-esteem, sustained at 3-month follow-up. Hunter et al. (2013) followed the same cohort programme and found elevated self-esteem still detectable at 12 months. Hayhurst, Hunter, Kafka & Boyes (2015) and Scarf et al. (2016) extended this to resilience, arguing the mechanism is perceived in-group belonging and basic psychological need satisfaction — not sailing per se.
This is directly contradicted by Capurso & Borsci (2013), N=147, which found small gains in Competence (ES≈0.20, p<.001) and Social (ES≈0.23, p<.05) self-concept that had fully reverted by three months. This contradiction is unresolved in the current literature (see section d).
For our specific population — a community club operating with Sea Scouts, not a school cohort or elite academy — the closest match is Dibben, Playford & Mitchell (2017), a prospective analysis of the 1958 British birth cohort (N=9,603). Former Scouts/Guides showed a better mental-health index at age 50 (MHI-5 +2.22, 95% CI 1.32–3.08) and 18% lower odds of mood/anxiety disorder, with the social gradient in mental health absent among former participants. This is population-matched and longitudinal but not sailing-specific.
Where sailing-specific evidence thins, we extend cautiously to adventure education generally: Hattie, Marsh, Neill & Richards (1997), the foundational meta-analysis (1,728 effect sizes, 96 studies), found an average end-of-program ES of 0.34 with further gains at follow-up (ES 0.17). Down et al. (2024), the strictest recent synthesis, found significant between-group improvements in resilience, self-esteem and social belonging but no change in self-efficacy or overall wellbeing, and rated the evidence base as high risk of bias.
Castagna & Brisswalter (2007) quantified the energy demand of Laser-class hiking by duration and performance level, confirming it as a genuine sustained physiological load. Valenzano et al. (2020) profiled 70 adolescent elite dinghy sailors using salivary cortisol and personality measures — one of few studies combining adolescent physiological and psychological markers, though in an elite competitive context. Evidence is thin for ordinary recreational youth sailors specifically; nearly all modern physiological data concerns elite Olympic-class athletes.
On safety: Nathanson, Baird & Mello (2010), an online survey (N=1,188, 1,715 injuries), found most injuries were soft-tissue and minor, with an injury rate of approximately 0.29 per 1,000 hours among novice dinghy sailors — low relative to rugby, football, or surfing. Two caveats: the low rate partly derives from Schaefer's (2000) German beginner-dinghy data, and self-selected surveys under-count. Foiling craft change this substantially — Feletti et al. (2021) reported 16 injuries per 1,000 sailor-hours on hydrofoiling boats, an order of magnitude higher. The most consistently under-managed hazard was sun exposure: ~30% average lifejacket use and low sunscreen use, with 16% of younger sailors sunburnt in the prior year.
Tracing the "blue space" hypothesis to origin: White, Smith, Humphryes, Pahl, Snelling & Depledge (2010) established experimentally that scenes containing water are rated as more preferred, positive, and restorative than identical scenes without water. Völker & Kistemann (2011) introduced "blue space" formally into the therapeutic-landscapes literature via a review of 36 studies. Depledge & Bird (2009) is the originating "Blue Gym" commentary. The strongest quantitative synthesis, Gascon, Zijlema, Vert, White & Nieuwenhuijsen (2017), a PRISMA systematic review, found consistent positive associations between blue-space exposure and mental health/physical activity, while explicitly concluding causality is not established and better-controlled, longitudinal work is needed.
Australian and local context is thin: Murrin et al. (2023), an Australian cross-sectional SEM study (N=350), found physical activity partially mediated the coastal-proximity/mental-health link and fully mediated the inland-water link. Oostenbach et al. (2023) and Crooks et al. (2022) are among the very few Australian, child-focused blue-space studies, the latter being the closest existing local precedent (regional Victorian primary schoolchildren).
This section is deliberately adversarial, in the interest of scientific credibility.
1. Effects that fade. The central unresolved contradiction is Grocott & Hunter (2009)/Hunter et al. (2013) — sustained, even 12-month, self-esteem gains — versus Capurso & Borsci (2013), where gains had reverted by three months. Current sailing evidence cannot support a claim of durable psychological benefit; short-term gains are reasonably well supported, long-term maintenance is contested.
2. Weak designs across the field. Grocott & Hunter themselves catalogue the field's flaws: over-reliance on global self-esteem scales, weak pre-intervention baselines, absent follow-up. Schijf, Allison & Von Wald (2017), a systematic review of sail training, found most studies were pre/post with no control group; those with longer-term follow-up disagreed with each other. Down et al. (2024) formally rated adolescent OAE evidence as high risk of bias and very low credibility.
3. Moderate, not transformative, effect sizes. Bowen & Neill (2013), an Australian meta-analysis of 197 studies (2,908 effect sizes), found a moderate short-term adventure-therapy effect (g=0.47) versus alternative (0.14) or no-treatment (0.08) comparisons, with little further change at follow-up. Age was the only significant moderator — older participants benefited more, tempering expectations for younger Scouts. Strongest effects were in clinical/therapy populations, not universal youth cohorts.
4. Blue space that hasn't replicated. Controlled studies (Gidlow et al., 2016; Triguero-Mas et al., 2017; White et al., 2015) found blue space improved mood relative to urban settings but no better than green space — water's specific superiority repeatedly fails to appear in controlled experiments. Smith et al. (2021), a meta-analysis of urban blue spaces, concluded blue space's health-promoting power is limited relative to green space. White et al. (2020) notes that cognitive-restoration benefits specifically are barely studied, and flags a likely publication bias against null/negative findings across this literature.
5. Self-report and self-selection throughout. Almost the entire sailing and blue-space literature relies on self-report outcomes and self-selected participants. Physical activity — not water exposure per se — has the strongest mechanistic support, raising the possibility that much of the "blue" effect is a "green gym" effect achievable without a boat.
The gaps above point to several open questions that haven't been properly studied in a population like ours. We're not claiming this study will resolve all of them — Project Anchored Youth is still in early planning, and its final scope will depend on what proves feasible. The list below is the set of open questions the study is currently designed to help address, at least in part, not a set of guaranteed findings.
Bottom line: the evidence supports a careful, testable claim — structured youth sailing plausibly benefits psychosocial wellbeing in the short term, is a genuine physical activity with low injury risk, and takes place in an environment with modest, activity-mediated health associations. It does not yet support strong claims of durable, sailing-specific, or water-specific effects in a community day-sailing population. That gap is the reason Project Anchored Youth exists.
